McKinney, Texas – 91͵ has hired Robert Montgomery to serve as the district’s new director of safety, security and transportation. Montgomery comes to 91͵ from Allen ISD and brings five years of experience in school safety as well as an 18-year background in law enforcement.

The new hire comes after longtime 91͵ Director of Safety, Security and Transportation Greg Hill announced his December retirement. The 91͵ Board of Trustees approved the decision at its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 19, and Montgomery is slated to assume his duties after the holidays with the start of the new semester in January.

“I’m very excited to join 91͵,” said Montgomery. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to be part of the team and to the challenges that come with it. I know that I have some big shoes to fill replacing Greg Hill, but I’m looking forward to it.”

Montgomery comes to 91͵ from Allen ISD where he has served as the district’s safety and security specialist since 2013. In that role, Montgomery has been responsible for the day-to-day safety and security of students, staff, parents and visitors of a 10th–12th grade high school with an enrollment of nearly 5,000 students as well as a freshman center, 18 elementary schools and three middle schools—totaling more than 21,000 students. During his time in Allen, he also served as the district’s truancy officer and as a liaison to parents, law enforcement agencies and court personnel.

In 91͵, he’ll oversee the safety, security and transportation for nearly 25,000 students at 30 campuses.

“Mr. Montgomery’s background is unique in that he has experience in the private sector, police and law enforcement and in school safety and security,” said 91͵ Chief Communications and Support Services Officer Cody Cunningham. “He has extensive experience in developing comprehensive safety plans at the university and K–12 levels, and his most recent role in Allen ISD has demonstrated his understanding of the complexity of developing safety plans for large high schools and middle schools. His background as a police officer is particularly relevant as he will be closely involved with the district’s School Resource Officer program.”

Originally from Minnesota, Montgomery served for 10 years as a police officer in St. Paul before moving to Texas in 2003. Here, he moved into corporate security for Target as a district manager in loss prevention but returned to law enforcement in 2005 in the University of Texas system, serving as a police officer on the UT Arlington and UT Dallas campuses.

During his eight-plus years in the UT system, Montgomery distinguished himself as class president of his police academy training class and was named Officer of the Year in 2006 and Training Officer of the Year in 2007 by the UT Arlington Police Department. In 2012, Montgomery was chosen as the Supervisor of the Year by the UT Dallas Police Department.

“Along with his experience in law enforcement and school safety and security, Mr. Montgomery is extremely approachable and an effective communicator, which I believe is a critical component of the job,” said Cunningham. “We were looking for someone who listens to students, parents and staff when it comes to how we can improve and ensure that we are creating the safest environment possible for our students.”

Montgomery holds an M.A. in Educational Administration, a B.A. in Organizational Management and Communication and an A.A.S. in Law Enforcement.

In addition to his work in the public school setting, he also serves as a reserve deputy constable for Collin County Pct. 3.
